Summer Field Trips
Bring your group to the Barnes Nature Center this summer for fun and educational nature experiences.
We are offering 8 summer field trips to choose from. Choose your favorite topic or visit us once a week throughout the summer and experience them all!
Barnes Nature Center is located on 175 Shrub Rd. in Bristol. Our newly expanded educational facility along with 70 acres to explore the forest, field, pond and stream provide an awesome opportunity for adventure!
Scheduling
Programs can be scheduled Tuesday through Friday from June 22 to August 27, 2010. Each program is 2 hours in length. Morning sessions are available from 9:00a.m.-12:00p.m. and afternoon sessions are available between 12:30p.m.-3:00p.m. Group size is limited to 25 youth.
Fee
$10 per youth with a minimum fee of $200 per group.
Limit of 25 youth. *There is no fee for group leaders.
Group leaders are expected to assist our instructor and are responsible for the conduct of their group.
Field Trip Topics
Interesting Insects: Summer is a great time to discover insects. The Center’s field and forest are perfect places for finding all sorts of bugs! Your group will use aerial nets in the field and will also look among the forest plants and soil to collect live insects. We will bring our bugs inside and look at them under a microscope and learn how to identify some common species and their place in the environment.
Reptiles: Learn about the life cycles and habitats of turtles, snakes and lizard that live in CT. We will visit our live animal room where you will be able to touch and hold some of our turtles and snakes. We will also examine skeletons, shells, fangs and rattles.
Amphibians: Visit with our live salamanders, frogs and toads as you learn about their life cycles and habitats in CT. Then venture outside to look for them in our pond, stream and forest.
Birds: See our live Red-tailed Hawk and Great Horned Owl along with our taxidermy birds to learn about the unique features of birds and their adaptations for eating and moving. Then go outside and learn how to use binoculars and how to identify birds on a bird walk.
Mammals: We will use our taxidermy animals, skulls, fur and footprints to learn about CT mammals and their adaptations from predators to prey. We will follow up with by exploring the Preserve looking for tracks and signs of mammals.
Rocks and Minerals: Using the Centers extensive rock collection, you will learn about the different rock regions of CT, the rocks found there and how to identify them. We will follow up with a foray on the Preserve to make your own rock collection.
Forest Hike: We will take a 2 hour hike throughout the Preserve observing and learning about the plants and animals that make the Preserve their home.
Pond and Stream Life: Using aquatic sampling nets, we will sample the pond and stream to discover the diversity of animal life found there and learn what role they play in the environment.
