World of Birds (2 hours)
Students will begin seated inside the Center's lecture room where a variety of
mounted bird specimens will be on display. Special features of birds
such as feathers, hollow bones and eggs will be discussed to first
introduce students to how birds differ from other animals. Primary,
secondary, contour, down and tail feathers will be passed around for students to
feel and learn each of their unique functions. Next, a chicken skeleton
will be shown so students can see how their body is adapted for flight.
The instructor will then let the students feel a real ostrich egg as they
discuss bird development and the variety of colors and sizes of eggs.
Once the special features of all birds have been discussed, the instructor will
then use a variety of mounted specimens to show birds adaptations to
different environments and lifestyles. Students will observe the different
beaks and feet of waterfowl, perching birds and birds of prey.
Students will then venture outdoors on the Center's trails to search for birds
and their homes. Both sight and sound will be used to tune in to bird
activities.
