The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut has openings at its Indian Rock Nature Preserve for Summer Camp Educators.  The Indian Rock Nature Preserve is a 270-acre environmental education facility serving the schools and families of Connecticut.  It conducts a wide range of day programs for 30,000 school children each year and operates an educational summer day camp for 120 campers per week.  The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut is a private not for profit organization.

 Job Description

 Title:                      Summer Camp Educator

 Supervisor:            Director of Education

 Location:               Indian Rock Nature Preserve, Bristol CT

 

Summary of Position:  The Summer Camp Educator teaches a wide variety of weekly topics to campers ranging from entering grade K to 10th grade.  Topics include; farm animals, wildlife, science, rocketry, geology, fishing, hiking, outdoor skills and many others.  The Summer Camp Educator's responsibilities include; understanding the subject matter, carrying out lesson plans, set up and clean up of activities, administering first aid as needed, maintaining accurate attendance, first aid and other relevant records, supervising lunch and/or swim times, providing a positive, safe and fun environment for campers.

 

  Entrance Requirements:

1.         Strong interest in biology or conservation with knowledge in outdoor skills, nature, handling and caring for animals.

2.         Experience teaching groups of children in a safe, organized, effective, engaging and positive manner.

3.         Certified in First Aid, CPR, Life Guarding or willing to obtain.

4.         Ability and interest to work with all age groups of children and volunteers.

5.         A strong commitment to the goals of environmental education and land preservation.

6.         Willingness to work variable hours.

 

        PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is required to walk; talk or hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop; crouch or crawl; and smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.

Compensation:  Wage dependent on experience
