 Title:                    Seasonal Naturalist

Supervisor:           Director of Education

Location:              Barnes Nature Center and Indian Rock Nature Preserve

 Summary of Position:

 The Naturalist is an entry level position working under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Director of Education.  The Naturalist is responsible for the instruction of educational programs at elementary schools, our nature preserves and assists in the general administration of the Centers as needed.

 Duties:

 Instructor (approximately 75 % of position)

 1.     Instruction of educational programs for visiting elementary school children and of educational programs at area schools.

       2.     Responsible for the setup, take down of programs and the maintenance of teaching equipment and materials.

       3.     Educational summer camp instructor and life guard.

       4.     Conducting evening and weekend programs with families and adults.

        General Administration / Caretaking as needed (approximately 25% of position)

         Entrance Requirements:

 1.     Bachelors degree in biology, environmental study or conservation.

       2.     Personal computing skills in database management and word processing.

       3.     A strong and deep commitment to the goals of environmental education and land    preservation.

       4.     Ability and interest to work with all age groups of children and volunteers of the Centers.

       5.     Willingness to work variable hours and days.

       6.     Capable of moderate to heavy physical work.

       7.     Highly motivated self starter with good planning and organizational skills.

       8.     PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; talk or hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop; crouch or crawl; and smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision , distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.

 Wage depending on experience

 Work Week:

Seasonal:   May 2008 to December 2008

Monday through Friday with rotating  Saturdays and Sundays.  Hours and days can be variable.
