The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut has an opening at its Indian Rock Nature Preserve for a Caretaker/ Instructor.  The Indian Rock Nature Preserve is a 270-acre environmental education facility serving the schools and families of Connecticut.  It conducts a wide range of day programs for 30,000 school children each year and operates an educational summer day camp for 120 campers per week.  The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut is a private not for profit organization.

 Job Description

 Title:                      Caretaker/ Instructor

Supervisor:           Director Indian Rock Nature Preserve

Location:               Indian Rock Nature Preserves and other preserves

 Summary of Position:

The Caretaker/ Instructor is a position working under the supervision of the  Director’s of the Indian Rock Nature Preserve.  The Caretaker/ Instructor is responsible for the maintenance of all preserves grounds, buildings including janitorial duties, equipment maintenance, farm animal care, native animal care,  along with the instruction of educational programs during the school year and the summer as needed.

 Duties:

 Caretaker (approximately 60 % of position)

 1.        Care of farm and native animal exhibits including feeding, cleaning, repairs and improvements.

  .        2.    Grounds work including lawn, orchard and trail maintenance.

       3.    Equipment maintenance and repairs of vehicles and power equipment.

       4.        Building repairs and maintenance including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and           painting.

       5.        Building cleaning.

 Instructor (approximately 40 % of position)

 1.     Instruction of educational programs for visiting elementary school children, scouts and summer campers..

 Entrance Requirements:

 1.        Strong Interest in biology or conservation with knowledge in caring for animals, degree preferred.

       2.        Mechanical aptitude, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and mechanical skills preferred or willing to learn.

       3.        A strong commitment to the goals of environmental education and land preservation

       4.        Ability and interest to work with all age groups of children and volunteers of the Centers

       5.        Willingness to work variable hours and days.

       6.        Certified in First Aid, CPR, Life Guarding or willing to obtain.

7.        PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is required to walk; talk or hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop; crouch or crawl; and smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.

Compensation:

Wage $13.00 per hour depending on experience, and Benefits as described in Full Time Employee Personnel Policy, employee medical coverage. 

Work Week:        Tuesday through Saturdays with rotating Sundays as needed.
