Discover how honey is made,
taste different types of honey and sample tasty honey treats. Investigate

Try your hand at the art of
spinning wool fibers into yarn. Students will card raw wool, roll it into
rolags, and using a drop spindle spin the
rolag into yarn. |

Discover the steps of
processing raw wool into felt. Each student will be working with the wool to

Students will learn to identify
common rocks found around their homes. Hands-on examination of local
specimens by small study groups will clue students into the forces that
shape the earth. Sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks will be covered
and uses of rocks and minerals by people will be presented along with rock
oddities. |

in the Connecticut hills? In this experience students will actually pan for
fool's gold. Discover how gold is found and examine various rock samples containing

A First American Experience
(1.5 hours) |
|
Experience a Native American
visit in the classroom. Students will discover the tools, the foods, and the
culture of Connecticut's early Native Americans. Hands-on examination of
reproduction artifacts, storytelling and samples of native foods will bring
to life the ways of our first native inhabitants. Presentation is adapted to
the grade level for which it is scheduled. |

Stone Tools (1 hour) |
|
Enter the Stone Age and
discover how ancient cultures used stone, wood bone, and animal materials to
make their hunting, cooking and ceremonial objects. Each student will be
able to examine ancient tools of stone once used by people from the past.
Students will learn to use recreations of tools made by our instructor to
try abrading, drilling and scraping. A class project will also be to make an
object out of stone with the guidance of our instructor. |

Minimum Fees & Class Size |
|
All programs have a minimum fee
of $70/hour of instructional time per one of our instructors. A
program scheduled during our prime season (Sept. 15th - Dec. 1st and April
1st to the end of school) that starts before 11:00 and does not end by 11:30
will have a daily minimum per instructor fee of $300. The maximum
class size is 25 students per presentation |

How to Schedule |
|
To make reservations for a
program visit to your classroom, please call the Indian Rock Nature Preserve
at (860) 583-1234 Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30. All programs require
advanced scheduling of at least two weeks. A written confirmation will be
sent to verify your date, time and fee. We request that you send us written
directions to your school from the nearest state highway at the time you
schedule your program. |
