Discovery Ride (1.5 hours)

Visible signs of spring begin to appear in April.  Students will enjoy a fun way to discover the different environments that make up the woodlands and waters of the Preserve on a tractor-drawn hay wagon.  The ride will stop at places of interest to touch, smell and observe life on the Preserve.  The maximum number of classes scheduled for a Discovery Ride is two.

The group will first be oriented with the rules of the hayride.  Students will then board our tractor-drawn hayride in order to proceed on the Discovery Ride.  Students will learn to look for the different signs of spring using their sense of touch, smell, sight, and hearing.  The ride will stop at the shore of Indian Lake in order to introduce the kinds of animals that live in the water.  A net will be used to scoop up the mud (or detritus) from the bottom of the pond.  Students will have the opportunity to observe some of the smaller animals that live in this mud and how these animals are linked to some of the larger animals that live in the pond, such as the fish, turtles, frogs, and ducks.  Throughout the ride students will be able to use their sense of smell to smell Sassafras, Black Birch, Spicebush, and Skunk Cabbage.  Students will also have the opportunity to feel some of the plants growing along the ride, such as the absorbent sphagnum moss or the fiddleheads of the emerging ferns.  Students will learn some of the products that can be made from some of these plants.  Students will have the opportunity to see where a raccoon lives and see a picture of a raccoon.  Students will also be introduced to other animals, including mammals and birds, that live in the forest.  At several stops, students will be able to see pictures of the animals that may live in the surrounding habitats.  Students will be able to observe the signs of some of these animals and learn how these animals survive in the forest.
