Turkey Time
(30 minutes)
Two turkeys will be brought into the classroom inside two
large animal carriers. One male known as a Tom, and one female called a Hen.
The students will form a half circle facing the turkeys. The instructor
will describe the differences between the domestic turkeys they have brought and
turkeys found in the wild. Next, the instructor
will teach the students about the different types of feathers found on birds
including the primary feathers, secondary
feathers, body or contour feathers, Down feathers and tail feathers. Each
feather will be passed around the class so every student can see and feel the
differences close-up. Once the feathers have been passed, the
students will be prepared to meet the Tom turkey. Directions will be given
on how to behave while the turkey is outside his cage. Once students are
ready, the Tom will be let out of his cage and allowed to walk in the
semi-circle in front of the children with the guidance of the instructor.
Special features will be shown such as the beard, carunkles and snood.
Students will also observe behavior such as drumming and fanning of the
feathers. The instructor will then hold the turkey in place and allow each
student to take turns touching the turkey's body feathers. Once each child
has had a chance to touch the Tom, he will return to his cage and the instructor
will then discuss the differences between Toms and Hens including egg laying,
behavior and physical features. The hen will then be allowed to walk in
front of the children so they can observe her up close. If time allows,
children may touch the hen to round out the program.
