The Power of One: Recycling and the Environment (1 hour)
Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut
and Tunxis Recycling Operating Committee (TROC), a regional recycling
organization located in Bristol, have teamed to provide The Power of One,
a one-hour lesson designed to be taught in the classroom. Third, fourth or
fifth grade classes
in schools located within the TROC service area may schedule The Power of One
classroom sessions from December through March. The TROC service area includes
the towns of Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Meriden, Morris, New Britain,
Plainville, Plymouth, Prospect, Southington, Warren, Washington, and Wolcott.
Power of One
Students will learn about resources used in making metal, glass, plastic,
cardboard, food, and beverage packaging. The “Three R’s” – reduce, reuse, and
recycle – will then be applied to solid waste generation and resource use to
help students understand the need to conserve resources and lessen impacts on
the environment. Students will identify ways to apply the “Three R’s” in their
lives. Students will visualize the ties between resource consumption,
conservation and recycling, and the environment. Students will recognize that
each individual – each one – has the power to make a difference in recycling.
Students will also learn how natural systems within the environment can reduce,
reuse, and recycle resources.
